A rangoli at the entrance is one of the first things guests see on Diwali. You do not need to be an artist to make a good one. A clear outline, three or four well-chosen colours and a steady hand are enough. You can buy rangoli powder in bright colours and reusable rangoli stencils from our Rangoli category.
Step by step for beginners
- Sweep and dry the floor. Powder sticks better to a clean, dry surface.
- Draw the outline with chalk or a little white powder. Start with a circle or a simple flower. If freehand is hard, place a rangoli stencil on the floor and fill it with powder.
- Fill the colours from the centre outwards, so you do not step on finished areas.
- Use a small spoon, a paper cone or a sieve to control how much powder falls.
- Finish with a ring of diyas or flower petals around the edge.

Tips for a neat result
- Practice the design once on paper before you start.
- Keep a few extra cones and a spare cloth to fix small mistakes.
- Place a dark border around bright colours so the pattern stands out.
- Make the rangoli in a sheltered spot if the entrance is windy.
